Things I've Learned in Film School / vol i
11:37 PMThe other day I was making a little list of all the big picture things that the last six months of being in film school has taught me and it ended up being not such a little list. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I'm obsessed with the film program, maybe it has to do with the fact that I truly believe that everything is a metaphor, maybe it's because I'm really big on documenting things (or I'm trying be better about it, anyway). Maybe it's a combination of all those things.
Volume I: it'll take a while.
FUN FACT: ROME WASN'T BUILT IN A DAY.
Sometimes [always] I wonder why I haven't hung that on my mirror or tattooed it on my forehead yet. Guess what? I'm not going to wake up and be the next Roger Deakins. Some days I'm going to wake up and forget to bring the ND filter, and not know how to get rid of that weird shadow on the wall, and buzz the focus on the first 9 takes of that dolly shot. And some days those things won't happen. I'm a long way from my 10,000 hours. Sometimes I'm going to say yes because I'm not perfect at saying no, even when I want to. I'm going to miss breakfast and I'm going to feel sassy when I shouldn't and I'm going to have no ideas and then a bunch all at once.
It's okay to be in the gap right now. It's part of being alive.
It's okay to have a lot of feelings. It's good for the soul. And also for filmmaking.
It's okay to not know what you're doing with your life. There's time.
It's okay to blaze your own trail. No matter what route you choose, it's going to take a while. Might as well enjoy the journey. Because it's going to be/already is pretty incredible.
